Building a society where humans can actually grow

A utopia is only useless if it cannot be built. This one has a first step, and the first step belongs to one person.

I call myself a practicing utopian because I do not think this is a faraway dream. I think it is a world we can all start to build — and the reason it stays out of reach is not that people lack the will. It is that the arrangement they are living inside was never designed around them.

So the shift is structural, not motivational. Not better attitudes inside the same system — a different system underneath. School, work, medicine, technology: every one of them meets a person somewhere, and every one of them currently meets the outside of that person.

What is missing is a layer between humans and everything they interact with: the part that knows who this person actually is before it decides what to offer them. Build that layer and the rest becomes possible. Leave it out and we keep optimising a world that is aimed slightly past everybody in it.

The future we are building

Not a prediction. A description of what becomes possible once the layer underneath is actually there.

  1. People stop performing and start becoming

Most people are maintaining a version of themselves that somebody else drafted. The performance is expensive — it runs on energy that could have gone into the thing they are actually built for. In the world I am describing, a person knows what moves them early enough that the performance never has to start.

  2. Technology that serves human depth, not just function

Every system we built got very good at what a person does and stayed illiterate about who they are. Depth is not a feature to bolt on afterwards — it is what technology should have been reading from the beginning. Once it does, the same tools that currently flatten people start doing the opposite.

  3. Institutions rebuilt around how humans actually work

School that asks a child what calls to them before the track hardens. Work that hires for motivation rather than polish. Medicine that treats the person and not only the symptom they arrived with. None of it requires new values. It requires institutions that can finally see what they are dealing with.

  4. Care gets real, and potential gets used

Care stops meaning sympathy and starts meaning something specific, early, and reachable by people who were never going to get an hour with a specialist. And potential stops being a word in a mission statement, because for once somebody can point at where it actually is.

What this is actually for

Every abstraction on this page cashes out in one very ordinary sequence, which repeats in almost every life I have sat across from.

How it usually goes
  1. 01

A child listens to themselves without being told to.

    The work belongs here
  2. 02

Then they learn to be careful.

  3. 03

    The voice goes quiet.

  4. 04

Thirty years later somebody sits across from me and cannot answer one question about who they are and what they want.

    Help currently arrives here

Eight-year-olds call helplines about stress now. They used to call about school.

Alienation starts early

Alienation

The specific loneliness of being surrounded by people and recognised by none of them — including yourself.

What changes: a person who can name what moves them stops being illegible. To themselves first, then to everybody making decisions about them.

Dissatisfaction

A life that works on paper and does not fit. Nothing is wrong, which is exactly what makes it hard to name and easy to keep.

What changes: aligning a life with true needs and passions is not a luxury upgrade. It removes the low-grade wrongness everything else was quietly compensating for.

Escapism

The apps, the scrolling, the retreats — an entire industry sitting on top of the silence. Distraction is what you reach for when the thing underneath is unattended.

What changes: attend to it and the reaching loses its job. Not through discipline — there is simply less to get away from.

Reaching people before the voice goes quiet is not a modest ambition. Across one life it is the difference between thirty years of compensating and thirty years of building. Across millions of lives, that is what changing the world actually looks like.

Why this needs AI at all

Depth has always been artisanal. That is the whole problem.

One trained listener, one room, one hour, one person. That is the supply, and it has not meaningfully changed in a century. Genuine self-understanding has therefore always been rationed — by money, by geography, by whether somebody happened to meet the right person at the right time.

A vision that depends on everybody getting that hour is not doable. It is a nice thought with no arithmetic behind it. So either depth stays a luxury, or something has to carry it that does not run out.

That is the only reason there is AI in this story. Not because AI is the moment. Because the alternative is telling most people that this part of being human was not built for them.

The job

Genuine self-understanding, not a label

The model has one task: give a person back what they already said, with the pattern underneath it made visible. Not a type, not a score. Their own words, read closely enough to show them something they knew and had never put into a sentence.

The standard

Actionable mental health, through scientific AI

Scientific means it can be checked: built on research, reviewed by psychologists, explainable line by line. Actionable means it does not stop at naming a feeling. Accessible means it reaches the people who were never going to get the hour — which is most people.

Where it lands first

HR and education

Two sectors where the cost of misreading a person is highest and the instruments are weakest. Work that hires and develops for motivation rather than polish. School that can ask a child what calls to them and actually hear the answer — before the track hardens.

The rule that holds all of it together

The model never gets the last word about a person. It reads, it shows its work, and the person decides what is true. Anything else is just a new institution deciding who you are — which is the thing we are trying to end.

Building together

This was never going to be a company with a good mission statement attached. It needs a team of like-minded people — most of whom I have not met yet.

Partners

Organisations with a surface

HR, education, mental health, finance. You already own the place where people show up and get read wrongly. You bring the room; I bring the layer that reads them properly.

Collaborators

People who can argue with it

Researchers, psychologists, builders, writers, teachers. Anyone who can push back on the model and make it better — or take one piece of this and carry it further than I would have.

Individuals

Anyone who recognised something

You do not need a title, a budget or permission. The first move is the one you make about your own life, and that is the part that compounds. Millions of those and the direction of the whole thing changes.
